Circularity in Used Oil

The management and recycling of used oil present significant environmental and economic challenges globally, particularly within the automotive sector due to extensive lubricant consumption. In India, over 6 million tons of hazardous waste, including used oil, are generated annually, with a mere 250,000 tons—representing only 10%—recycled. Critical issues include insufficient regulatory frameworks, dependence on informal collection networks, and constrained access to feedstock. The Working Group on Used-Oils seeks to evaluate the current recycling landscape and develop targeted strategies to enhance regulatory clarity, improve infrastructure, foster stakeholder collaboration, and drive technological innovation. The ultimate objective is to establish a sustainable used-oil recycling ecosystem in India, generating substantial environmental and economic benefits.
