Working Group – Dry Cell Batteries

RECEIC has launched a Working Group on Dry cell Batteries to promote collaborative collection and recycling of dry cell/alkaline batteries in India. With Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations coming into effect in 2025-26, the initiative aims to address challenges in collection, consumer awareness, and recycling infrastructure. The Working Group will focus on mapping the collection ecosystem, developing scalable collaborative models, and implementing a pilot project to demonstrate a viable business case for battery collection. International best practices, such as the EU Battery Directive and voluntary stewardship programs, will inform the approach, adapted to the Indian context. The initiative will bring together battery producers, recyclers, NGOs, and other stakeholders to co-create practical solutions, establish enabling frameworks, and enhance circularity in the portable battery sector.
